What is forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching is a land clearing method that grinds trees, brush and undergrowth into mulch right where they stand. One machine does the cutting and grinding, so there is no pushing, piling, hauling or burning. The root balls stay in the ground to keep the soil stable, and grass grows back up through the mulch.
How forestry mulching works on Central Texas land
Forestry mulching clears land with a purpose-built machine. The mulching head grinds standing trees, brush and undergrowth into small pieces and leaves them on the ground as mulch. Nothing gets pushed into piles, loaded onto trucks or burned.
Forestry mulching also leaves the soil where it belongs. Root balls stay in the ground to keep the soil stable, which matters on Hill Country slopes where topsoil is thin. 9 Arrow clears everything from light regrowth and dense brush to large hardwoods and mature trees. Selective clearing keeps the trees you want and takes out the rest. Mass acreage clearing opens up whole tracts. If you want the mulch gone, we can stockpile it or haul it off.
Forestry mulching equipment matched to your terrain
9 Arrow runs two kinds of forestry mulching machines. Compact track machines handle tight access, slopes and uneven ground. Large articulated wheel machines bring high horsepower and high production to bigger jobs. Our equipment includes a CAT 275 compact track loader and a Weiler M860A mulcher.
Machine size sets the pace. With reasonable tree coverage, our smaller machines clear about half an acre to 1 acre in an 8-hour day. Our larger high-horsepower machines clear about 1 to 3 acres a day, and up to 5 acres in lighter conditions. Heavy density and rough terrain slow every machine down.
There is no tree size limit on forestry mulching. Bigger trees take more time. A tree that takes an hour on a smaller machine can take as little as 15 minutes on a large one. Pace and density drive price, which our guide to forestry mulching cost per acre explains.
The 9 Arrow fine finish
A 9 Arrow forestry mulching job ends with a fine finish. The material left behind is small, the kind people describe as “toothpicks” or “hamster chips.” A fine finish looks better, is easier to drive and walk over, and lets grass regrow faster than big chunks and torn-up ground.
We treat your land as if it were our own, and we don't consider a job finished unless we're proud of the result. Selective clearing, brush piles and tree health
Selective forestry mulching removes the brush and failing trees you do not want and leaves the oaks and shade trees you do. In Central Texas, drought stress and oak wilt are common reasons trees decline. Oak wilt spreads in defined paths, and an infected tree cannot be restored. Selective clearing is often the best way to protect the healthy trees around it.
Old brush piles are forestry mulching work too. We grind existing piles, including old bulldozer piles as large as a house, into mulch on site. Burning is often prohibited during burn bans, and grinding gets rid of the pile without a match or a trailer.
When the plan calls for full removal, such as ground under a future foundation, we grub with bulldozers and excavators and mulch the root balls on site. Do you remove root balls when forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching leaves root balls in the ground on purpose to keep the soil stable. When full removal is needed, such as under a future foundation, 9 Arrow grubs the roots out with bulldozers and excavators. Our preferred method is to mulch those root balls on site afterward, so nothing leaves on a truck.
How long does grass take to grow back after forestry mulching?
Grass regrowth after forestry mulching depends on how much mulch is left on the ground. Under a light layer, grass can start coming back within days after a rain. Under heavy mulch, up to 12 inches deep, grass can take 2 to 3 years to come back thick. A fine finish helps grass recover faster.
