Henderson County ground: savanna, pine and two big lakes

Henderson County lies in East Texas between the Trinity River on the west and the Neches on the east. Athens, the county seat, sits near the middle, about 60 miles southeast of Dallas, where US 175 meets SH 31 and SH 19. The ground is hilly and rolling, from 256 to 763 feet above sea level.

Texas Parks and Wildlife places the county in the Post Oak Savannah. The east side runs to timber on deep sandy loams, and the claypan areas have shallow sandy loam over dense clay. Loblolly and shortleaf pine, sweetgum and post oak grow here on about 40 inches of rain a year, against about 33 in Comal County, where we're based.

Cedar Creek Reservoir lies partly in the northwest corner. Lake Palestine sits on the southeast side, where Henderson, Smith, Cherokee and Anderson counties meet. Across the Neches is Smith County, covered under land clearing in Tyler.

What we clear on Henderson County land

Much of the brush here is yaupon. Texas Parks and Wildlife says that with fire all but gone from the Post Oak Savannah, the result has been "a high density of mostly smaller trees with a thick understory of yaupon."

Forestry mulching grinds that understory where it stands. The soil and root balls stay in place, and the finish is fine enough to drive over. Selective clearing keeps the post oaks and pines you want.

Pasture matters here too. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 62,098 cattle and calves and 47,675 acres of hay in Henderson County. Ranch and pasture clearing opens up fields that brush has taken back.

Henderson County burn bans and brush piles

Henderson County Commissioners Court bans outdoor burning in dry spells under Texas Local Government Code 352.081. Recent orders have run 14 to 30 days, and a new order can follow. The October 2025 ban came at the fire marshal's request with the county's average Keetch-Byram Drought Index at 653, above the 575 that suggests a ban. Breaking one is a Class C misdemeanor.

A brush pile you cannot burn just sits there. Brush removal with a forestry mulcher takes burning out of the plan. We grind standing brush and old piles, including bulldozer piles as large as a house, right where they are. No burn piles. No hauling. No mess.

Clearing near Cedar Creek Lake, Lake Palestine and the river bottoms

Land near the lakes, the Trinity or the Neches needs a rules check first. Henderson County's Development and Floodplain Administration Office handles floodplain administration outside city limits and requires a floodplain assessment when development is planned in the Special Flood Hazard Area.

Wet ground can also bring in Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, which covers the discharge of dredged or fill material into waters of the United States, including wetlands. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers handles those permits. If your tract has a creek, slough or wet bottom, check with the Corps and the county, and we'll clear to the limits you set.

Questions from Henderson County landowners

More answers in our FAQ

Is 9 Arrow working in Henderson County now?

Yes. 9 Arrow Land Service is working in Henderson County now. Our home base is still Spring Branch, in the Texas Hill Country, and our crews and machines come to your land. Our East Texas service area also takes in the Tyler area, and work in Pittsburg is coming up soon.

How far is Henderson County from 9 Arrow's home base?

Athens is roughly 220 miles northeast of Spring Branch in a straight line. Because of that distance, a Henderson County job starts with a discovery call, then a site visit. Density, tree size and species, terrain, access and soil conditions set the estimate, which comes by the day or by the acre.

Will yaupon grow back after mulching in Henderson County?

Yaupon can grow back. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says yaupon resprouts after mechanical removal and recommends follow-up herbicide treatment. Forestry mulching leaves a fine, open finish, so regrowth is easy to spot. Ask your county extension office about a treatment plan before the brush closes back in.

Is Henderson County in the Piney Woods or the Post Oak Savannah?

Mostly the Post Oak Savannah. Texas Parks and Wildlife designates Henderson County as Post Oak Savannah, but the Handbook of Texas describes East Texas timberland on deep sandy loams along its east side, and loblolly and shortleaf pine and sweetgum grow across the county. One tract can hold open pasture, pine and a yaupon thicket.
